Onderzoekers uit VS, Finland en VK winnen beurs UAE Rain
ABU DHABI, Verenigde Arabische Emiraten –(BUSINESS WIRE)– Drie onderzoeksgroepen uit de Verenigde Staten, Finland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk zijn uitverkozen tot winnaars van een beurs van 5 miljoen dollar voor de tweede fase van het UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science. Zijne hoogheid Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, vice-minister voor Presidentiële zaken van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en voorzitter van de raad van trustees van het Nationaal Centrum voor Meteorologie en Seismologie, reikte de beurs uit aan de onderzoekers. Hij deed dit namens zijne hoogheid sjeik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
De drie hoofdonderzoekers van de teams zijn:
- Dr. Paul Lawson, uit de Verenigde Staten, voor zijn onderzoek naar nieuwe methodes voor de stimulering van regen. Hij onderzocht regenstimulatie met behulp van processen voor ijsvorming in stapelwolken.
- Hoogleraar Hannele Korhonen, uit Finland. Zij onderzoekt de rol van atmosferische aerosols voor de stimulering van neerslag.
- Hoogleraar Giles Harrison uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Hij krijgt de beurs voor zijn onderzoek naar de elektrische eigenschappen van wolken en modellen voor regenval.

The three proposals that received awards this year were selected from 91 global scientific research proposals submitted by teams representing leading international institutions and organizations. Launched by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs of the UAE and managed by the UAE National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science is an ambitious global initiative designed to stimulate rain enhancement research. The Program seeks to address water security challenges through international cooperation to advance scientific and technical research and innovation. The research areas that the Program addresses include the fundamental understanding of rainfall enhancement, data modeling, analysis and evaluation, and experimental design, technologies and instrumentation. The UAE Research Program has witnessed an expansion in the geographical participation of the Second Cycle, with over 398 scientists and researchers affiliated to 180 institutes from 45 countries.
