Alps Electric Capacitive Input (Photo: Business Wire)
At CEATEC JAPAN 2018, Alps Electric will exhibit its latest products and technologies for markets encompassing current major technology trends represented by CASE domains (connected cars, autonomous driving, sharing and services, and electric vehicles) and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Centerpiece Exhibit: Premium Technology Cockpit (Debut Exhibit)
This vehicle cockpit brings together and combines device technologies of Alps Electric while achieving compliance with R79, a standard relevant to autonomous driving. The cockpit showcases highly functional devices ideal for autonomous driving systems, which demand highly advanced levels of safety and reassurance.
• Premium Capacitive Input and Control
A new input style based on Alps Electric’s capacitive technology that enables use of gestures to open and close windows, among other functions. Supporting seamless design inside autonomous vehicles with input and control features that have a premium feel gives the driver a much more sophisticated user experience. The technology is incorporated into the steering system, too. It detects touch and gripping of the wheel, and closely tracks the driver’s hand movements to enable hands-off detection, which is needed to comply with the R79 standard.
Other Demonstrations
• Addressable Marker and Optics/Electromagnetic Induction Technology
This demonstration combines Alps Electric’s electromagnetic induction technology, enabling highly responsive, fine-tuned control, with diffractive optical elements (DOEs) realized using nano-level mold machining and molding technology. Laser light (invisible light) is beamed at high speed toward cards containing unique pattern information. Reflected information corresponding to each of the patterns (e.g. an illustration) is read and projected. The angle and orientation of the unique pattern information can be perceived, too, allowing projection of information with tracking of card movements and tilting.
• Rolling Ball Mechanism Linked to HAPTIC™ Reactor (Electromagnetic Induction Technology Demo)
Sensations from vibrations and sounds caused by balls rolling down a ball run are recreated in real time using a vibration device. Alps Electric’s HAPTIC™ Reactor generates a diverse range of vibrations and boasts an outstanding fast response. Use of four resonance points allows realistic recreation of the feel of balls rolling down the tracks and variations of sound pitch as the balls hit obstacles.
